VR University project update

Quick update on my progress for this VR project for American University.

Hands and feet are tracking properly.

Lip syncing with the headset’s mic works, the morph models for the lip syncing are triggered by the various sounds that are picked up from the user by the headset’s microphone.

The eyes blink and can look up, down, left, and right.

The combination of these features makes the avatar much more lively and greatly enhances the immersive features of this VR app.  In the near future, this concept can be brought online with many users and feel like they are in the same room.

Oktoberfest Pinball Animation Demo Reel

I created these animations for the Oktoberfest Pinball machine by American-Pinball.
https://www.american-pinball.com/

  • Made the 3D models of the roller coaster train, track, rails, and supports.
  • Animated the roller coaster movement along the track
  • Animated the camera movements for the moving shots
  • Placed the cameras for the stationary shots

The artwork for the front and sides of the coaster cars were made by Jeff Busch.  I mapped them to the 3D model of the coaster cars.
The artwork for the ducks, riders, and the mountains in the background were also done by Jeff Busch.

KeyFrame and Motion Capture Animation Demo Reel

This is my character animation demo reel.

The Mech and the Mouse character were hand keyed by me, and the humanoid models and witches were motion captured.

I cleaned the motion capture data, applied them to the witch models, imported them into Unreal Engine 4, and then created the cinematic scene with the engine’s matinee and cinematic tools.

Neon City Prerendered Animation

Neon City is a prerendered 3D animation I made using Maya and the Arnold renderer. I created the 3D models of every building, vehicle, road, street light, etc.. I animated the motorcycles and cameras. Every light you see is a unique light source that illuminates and reflects off of all the city’s surfaces.

The end product is a cold, overpowering city, that sets the mood for a neon motorcycle chase.

Gottlieb Soccer 3D Model

I created this 3D model of my own Gottlieb Soccer pinball machine playfield in 3DS Max.  I disassembled the playfield and took dozens of photographs of the playfield and its components to be used for reference.  I began with the bare playfield and then added the components, the plastics, the rubber bands, and then the miscellaneous components such as the metal rails, screws, and apron.  The total polygon count is under 19,000 polygons.

Man Vs God VR

Man Vs God is a hybrid VR multiplayer game where one player plays in VR and the other plays on the desktop.

The VR player plays as the man on the ground who defends his bases from beasts and powers the God tries to use against him. The VR player is playing in the first person perspective.

The Desktop player is playing as the God. He has a bird’s eye view of the battlefield and is essentially playing an RTS game.

Stock Broker VR Highlight Reel

Stock Broker is a VR game where you start out in a normal office environment, and then everything takes a sudden unexpected turn.

This game uses the HTC Vive VR headset and we used the SteamVR plugin for Unity.

Headphones are required to perceive the spatial audio in this experience.

“Look Away” Highlight Reel

I worked on a VR game for google cardboard titled, “Look Away.”  This is a seated experience where the player finds himself in the center of the story and if he looks away, he loses.  Are you brave enough to make it to the end?

I worked mostly on implementing the spatial audio effects and the menu UI.

Headphones are required to perceive the spatial audio in this experience.

“Survival Night” Highlight Reel

Another game I worked on is called, “Survival Night.”  Halloween is the theme of this game where the evil pumpkins have taken over the neighborhood and you need to activate the lasers to destroy the pumpkin mothership.  You are armed with a rabbit that shoots carrots, this is surprisingly effective as its ears work very well for aiming sights.
